Garden STEM Program

Garden STEM Program

Yarra Primary is currently in the process of revamping our garden program to incorporate a more robust program that implements and improves the quality of garden based Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

Through hands on, project based learning opportunities, the program enables students across the whole school (Years Prep to 6) to experience enriched lessons with the opportunity to work in their own living laboratory, increasing their affinity for core STEM disciplines and a greater understanding of sustainability.

The students experience holistic, real-life learning in the garden – from counting in first grade through calculating volume, area and mass; the garden provides students with the opportunity to work hands-on with their curriculum and apply their knowledge to real world problems.

The Garden STEM Program provides students with the opportunity to:

    •    conduct experiments;
    •    view seasonal and land-form changes;
    •    take population surveys; and
    •    watch life cycles unfold before their eyes.

We welcome volunteers from the school and community, and our volunteers find it fun and interesting to work alongside the children.

To volunteer: Please contact the school on 9428 3286 or email:

We also wish to say a big thank you to all of our current and past volunteers.
