Physical Education & Sporting Activities
A comprehensive and fun Physical Education program is offered to all grade levels at Yarra Primary.
Junior School Physical Education
Our Junior School program is designed to ensure participation of all students in a safe, energetic and fun environment.
The program focuses on:
• Fundamental motor skills
• Games skills
• Safety – Road/Water safety
The Junior School children engage in weekly one hour of PE instruction. Each session commences with Warm Up and Fitness based activities. Specific skill development is introduced, practised and implemented in Minor Game situations.
Through out the year Junior Games days are conducted, often based on a relevant Theme – Olympics/Aqua Sports.
Sporting Clinics also compliment Yarra Primary School's Junior School Physical Education Program.
The Junior School participates a Swimming and Water Safety program at the end of the year in Term 4.
Preps PMP (Perceptual Motor Program)
The prep students participate in a Perceptual Motor Program which aims to give the child experiences in seeing, hearing, touching, processing, making perceptual judgements and reacting though carefully sequenced activities which children enjoy doing like running, hopping, skipping, jumping, balancing, crawling, climbing, throwing, catching, bowling, sliding, etc, using a variety of common and specially designed equipment. 1

Senior School Physical Education
Senior School students are engaged with various sporting activities throughout each term of the school year. A weekly session of Senior School Sport engages students in 4 team sports on a rotational basis.
All classes also engage in an additional weekly session of PE that is teacher directed. Interschool Sports days, Cross Country Carnivals, Tennis and occasional Sport Clinics also compliment Yarra Primary School's Senior School Sport activities.
There are 4 Houses at the school and all children from Prep to Grade 6 are placed in a House.
The Houses are named after the 4 streets that form the boundary of our school grounds:
- Buckingham – Red
- Davison – Blue
- Kent – Green
- Gardiner – Yellow
Each year we have House competitions in Athletics during Term 1 and Cross Country in Term 2. We were unable to hold our House Athletics in 2013 due to industrial action.
Our intensive swimming program is held over two weeks each year across the whole school.
Catering to all skill levels, the 10 day intensive program is designed to develop the students' swimming skills and water safety awareness.
Lessons are conducted by AUSTSWIM instructors, using the facilities of the Richmond Recreation Centre – just a short walk from the school.
Senior Swimming Program (Grades 3-6) is conducted in Term 1 and Junior Swimming Program (Grades Prep-2) is conducted in Term 4.
Yoga is an ancient science which helps to create health and well-being by building awareness, strength, and flexibility in both mind and body.
As part of the Asian Studies Program, Yarra is very excited about the opportunity of providing yoga to our students.
In 2013, we will be into our second year of integrating yoga withing the Yarra Primary school curriculum and will start with grades 1–2 in Term 2. Other grades will follow later in the year.
Senior Grades each experience a term of specialised coaching – provided by the Kids Tennis Foundation.
The courts are located at Lynal Hall Richmond – walking distance from the school.
Bike Education is conducted with the assistance of Bicycle Victoria in Term 4 for Grades 5 & 6 students. Bike Ed is an accredited education program for Primary School children which develops bike safety skills and knowledge of road laws when travelling by bike.
Over an intensive 5-10 day course the students are involved in practical activities and theory sessions where they develop the knowledge and skills to ride a bicycle safely and independently on paths and roads and building skills for riding in traffic.
Interschool Sports are held throughout the year with the Senior Grades participating in the Richmond District Schools Sports Association competing in Volleyball, Bat Tennis, Rounders and Kanga Cricket in Terms 1 & 4. Soccer, Netball, Basketball and Softball in Terms 2 & 3.
Inter-DistricT School Sports
Our Senior students (Grades 3-6) compete in the Northern Metropolitan Region inter-distric school competitions in the Cross Country running in Term 2 and Athletics in Term 3.
Out of hours extra-curricular sporting programs
Extra-curricular sporting programs are conducted at the school.
The privately-run Kelly Sports introduces children to a variety of activities such as soccer, cricket, basketball, gymnastics, general ball skills and more.
Introduced in 2009, Soccer sporting clinics have been conducted at the school in a familiar and friendly environment. The popular programs have run after school or at lunchtime on our spacious sporting grounds – high quality synthetic turf offers an excellent outdoor surface in which to play. Unfortunately the program has been suspended since the start on 2013, but we hope to have it running again later in the year.
