Curriculum

Yarra Primary School aims to provide a curriculum which best enables students to experience the process of knowledge creation stimulated by inquiry, through a student-centred approach, a focus on self-directed learning, and an active approach to learning. Students should develop research skills and become life-long learners.

There is strong educational theoretical support for the use of inquiry approaches, and evidence shows an inquiry approach can enhance student engagement, academic achievement and higher order learning outcomes. Benefits can also accrue for teachers through the integration of teaching and research, increased enjoyment and interaction with students and the rewards gained from enhanced learning outcomes for students.

Teachers plan collaboratively to develop authentic learning experiences – this may include specialist teachers, year level teachers, subject coordinators, coordinators and school leadership. Cross-curricular connections are valued and utilised in support instruction and acquisition, including the use of ICT skills.

At Yarra PS the curriculum is comprised of three overarching curriculum areas:

ENGLISH, HUMANITIES AND LANGUAGE Learning (Reading and Viewing; Writing; History; Geography; Economics; and Japanese)
